Combining the demands of caring with paid employment is a very difficult 'juggling' act! So much so that nearly one in five carers have either left a job, or been unable to take up employment because of their caring responsibilities.
The Work and Families Act 2006 gave carers the right to request flexible working, and proposals included in the new National Carers Strategy document, 'Carers at the heart of 21st century families and communities', should improve things further.
We will endeavour to support both carers and employers to ensure that they are aware of their rights and obligations, and to develop local initiatives to ensure all parties benefit from 'joint-working' in this area.
